The Lwena or Luvale Pwevo mask represents a primordial female ancestor which embodies beauty and morality.  The mask is linked to the initiation rites of the Makanda secret association.  The initiation process serves as an educational institution where initiates learn about manhood, sexuality and their roles as husbands and fathers.  The wooden mask takes an oval form with arched eyebrows, slit eyes, scarification on the forehead and checks wearing a fiber
