Kran masks were thought to be manifestations of forest spirits.  Associated with secret societies, these masks were used as agents of social control, protection against illness, death and poor crops.  This mask has a zoomorphic structure with visor-like forehead, strong nose and tubular projecting eyes.  There are four eye slits for seeing, open mouth and distinctive use of white and blue pigments.
