Luba women are considered to have intrinsic qualities that make them ideal communicators with the supernatural world. The Luba carved traditional female figures regarded as receptacles of the spirits of benevolent ancestors. They were used during initiations and for medical and divination purposes. This figure has an oval face, half open eyes, arms akimbo and welted skin scarification upon the pelvis evoking themes of reproduction and maternity.
