The Dinka live in the region of the upper white Nile in Southern Sudan. This Dinka shield is made of buffalo hide with an oval body and raised boss at the center, threaded down the length of a wooden pole. The pole acts as a support and a handle grip.
Dinka shields were used during initiations of young boys, ritual ceremonies and in warfare.
