Miniature Toma masks were used as powerful charms for personal well-being and protection against harm. These masks replicated the forms of face masks that were worn by performers on public occasions. Hand-sized masks were kept hidden in private altars where ritual sacrifices were made for protection during forest work, travel or to counter witchcraft.
