The Yombe maternity figure called Phemba, represents the mythical mother and child honoring the maternal spirit associated with fertility. The seated mother wears a mitre-shaped crown with scarification on her chest and back. The nursing child is held by the mother’s clasping hands, the infant’s body conforms to the arc of the mother’s lap.
