The wooden Yombe maternity figure called Phemba, represents the mythical mother and child honoring the maternal spirit used in fertility and funerary cults. The mother is seated cross legged wearing a mitre-shaped crown. There is scarification on the chest and back, bracelets on the arms, the ears are naturalistic and mouth is open with filed teeth. The nursing child is held by the mother’s clasping hands, the infant’s body conforms to the arc of the mother’s lap.
