The Eastern Pende carved masks that portrayed a variety of characters including the chief, the sorcerer, the clown and a number of types of women. These masks may have been used during initiations, for crowd control and entertainment. Our mask displays a distorted face with aggressive, tubular eye, wrinkled forehead, pigment and a raffia bonnet with feathers.
