Description: This Ituri mask may be attributed to the Byeru people from the rainforest region of the Northeastern Congo. These masks represent ancestral spirits and were used by ritualist and circumcisers to teach morals, taboos and ethics during initiations. The mask’s painted surface of white dots are similar to the painted bark cloth textiles of the rainforest Pygmies.
