The Chokwe comb of carved bone was a prestige object reflecting status and wealth and was considered a luxury item inherited through generations. Combs, hair picks and pins were used for building and maintaining hairstyles. The carved figure may represent an ancestor spirit wearing a chief’s headdress. The geometric design between the figure and teeth of the comb may have symbolic meaning.
