    The Chokwe carved a vast number of impressive functional objects like this superb mortar of a crouching figure with hands to the head and elbows resting on it’s knees. The expressive face attracts our attention with a deep brown patina, a copper ring is attached to the torso. This Chokwe Mortar was used for grinding tobacco or hemp and also functioned as a prestige object that elevated the owner’s status.     Here we present an Ejagham headdress that is janus faced, mounted on a basketry pedestal worn on top of the dancer’s head. This Ejagham or Ekoi headdress has a tapering neck, displaying two faces covered with antelope skin, with open mouth of filed teeth, and tapered coiffure with human hair. These masks were worn by accomplished male dancers and were used during funerals and initiations.     The Igbo crest mask of the middle Cross River region has an extremely rich and diverse masking tradition that embodies the spirits of tribal ancestors.  The mask projects expressive facial features with white pigment, sensitive eyes, aquiline nose, open mouth showing teeth and an elaborate four-part hairstyle with pigtails. Crest masks share stylistic forms of neighboring tribal groups such as the Idoma, Ijo, Isoko, Ibibio and Ekoi.   They were danced in ceremonies for fertility, to cure illness, and at funerals.     The Kongo figure was used by a ritual specialist to contact hidden forces of the spirit world. Kongo and Vili power figures were used for healing, hunting, judicial disputes, to combat witchcraft and for protection against misfortune. The figure’s face is refined with glass eyes, open mouth and a cap-like coiffure. His abdomen has a mirrored cavity containing secret medicines, while right arm is raised in an aggressive manner. He wears a snakeskin collar and there is a bundle of animal horns attached to his back. The primary characteristic are the protuberant, conical eyes that are surrounded by small holes. The mask has polychrome paint in geometric patterns, a triangular nose, small mouth, and raffia cloth headdress decorated with cowrie shells. The Kuba Pwoom mask was danced at funerals, boys' initiations, for entertainment, and may have also functioned for social control.
