African miniature carvings exemplify artists’ workmanship and detail. Our current gallery, exhibits miniature Dan and Bassa passport masks and Dan family masks. Miniature masks were powerful charms used for personal protection against illness, harm, for successful hunting and safe travel through forests. Offerings of food, beverage, tobacco and palm oil were rubbed on the masks to increase it’s power. Family Dan masks have no eye holes or holes for attachments. These masks were kept by individual families as a protective devices for the household.
